So we've acknowledged that bigotry, wilfill ignorance, hate and discord, intolerance, dishonesty, the erosion of people's rights, anti-intellectualism, cronyism and corruption win again in this country. Meanwhile, since Trump made such a big deal out of immigration - pretty much one of his only three talking points at all - Latino votes inextricably surged in the election results. Have these people just not been watching Trump and his speakers denigrate immigrants and Hispanics relentlessly for years?
Trump can't destroy democracy. I'm not concerned about that. He is not a serious thinker. He has no ideas or convictions. He has no moral compass. He is literally all ego and no substance. He is the shell of a man who is warmed only by his need for power and the spotlight. That's what this entire run, and the last run, has ultimately been about, the sustainability of Trump himself.
If supporters haven't learned by now - clearly evident by what he says and how he says it - that he doesn't care about this country and that he doesn't care about them, it's hopeless. So they have their precious Trump for four years. If he lives, he will surely cause some damage. But he can't stop the tide of progress or upend this democracy. I believe in its strength and resilience. It's been proven time and again.
This is not about left and right anymore. If the left had put up someone so obviously vile on the ticket, he or she would have incurred my criticism as well. If the right could ever find a candidate, or god forbid, put forth a whole party of politicians who seemed to care about the interests of all people, not just a few, I would consider what they had to say.
Here's the thing: all subjugated people in this country will one day have their full rights to marry who they want, to control decisions related to their own bodies, etc. We will find sensible solutions on immigration and health care, and we will move toward a more inclusive society that works for everyone and not just some people. Conservatives can only stall these projects; they can't stop them. They are fighting history, which is already a lost cause.
I'm disappointed in this country. I'm disappointed in every single person who says they love truth and honesty but who, nonetheless, helped a compulsive, shameless liar; malignant narcissist; a felon; misogynist; and an abuser, take back the White House, and I'm disappointed in people who say they love Christ who supported someone who is the very antithesis of what Christ was supposedly about in his teachings. I'm disappointed in people who would put party above democracy; the nation's best interests over personal ambition.
This was an ugly display. But I'm not without hope for this country. We are far from the best country in the world, as many, even Harris, would have you believe, and as we just proved, yet again. But I believe that we will get there sooner or later, kicking and screaming perhaps, into a society in which we can, all of us without exception, enjoy the full benefits of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that was promised at the founding.
